Checking Laptop Fit Before You Buy

A screen diagonal describes the screen. It does not tell you whether the complete device will pass through a bag’s opening or sit comfortably in a sleeve.

Measure the device you actually carry

Record the width, depth and thickness of the closed computer. Include a protective case if you leave it on while traveling. Use one set of units consistently; one inch is exactly 2.54 centimeters. Measure the device itself rather than relying on a screen-size label.

Find the usable internal measurements

Look for the dimensions of the dedicated compartment, not just the outer dimensions of the bag. Lining, padding, seams and pocket walls all use space. A bag can be wider on the outside than the opening or compartment inside it.

Where internal dimensions are not listed, do not treat an exterior measurement as a substitute. Ask for the information you need before purchasing. CarrBrief does not recommend a particular fit from screen size alone.

Check the route into the compartment

Compare the opening as well as the space at the bottom. A zipper may stop short of the full width, and rounded corners or a tapered sleeve can limit usable room. The device should enter without forcing the closure or pressing hard against the seams.

Leave space for the rest of the day

A charger, notebook and files add thickness to the main load. Even if a computer fits by itself, the filled bag may become crowded. Plan separate places for hard accessories so they do not press directly against the device.

Understand what padding does and does not tell you

Padding is one construction detail, rather than a device-fit measurement. It does not establish a particular computer size, a drop rating, waterproofing or a guarantee against damage. A model label such as 15.6-inch is a starting point; the usable space and opening still matter.

A quick check before ordering

  1. Measure the closed device, including its case.
  2. Confirm the usable compartment and opening dimensions.
  3. Account for your charger, papers and other daily items.
  4. Make sure no closure or seam needs to be forced.
  5. If a required measurement is missing, ask us before choosing.
